A vote to elect a councillor to represent a ward in Coventry has been postponed following the death of one of the candidates.

Dave Anderson was to contest the Labour-held Radford ward for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition on Thursday, the city council said.

A new election is likely to held in June. All other elections to the council will go ahead as planned on Thursday.

Julie Newman, returning officer for elections to Coventry City Council, said: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of Dave Anderson following his sad death."

Voters are still being urged to turn out for the day's other elections.

“Although this means this Thursday’s Radford ward election for a place on the city council must be re-arranged, I would urge Radford residents to still turn out to vote as planned as the elections of Mayor for the West Midlands Combined Authority and the Police and Crime Commissioner for the West Midlands remain unaffected," Ms Newman added.

“I’d also remind voters that they will need their Voter ID to vote.”

A Coventry City Council election which had to be cancelled after a candidate died will take place next month. Voters in Radford will go to the polls to elect a councillor on Thursday June 20, the council confirmed today (May 7).

The contest had been due to take place last Thursday, May 2 along with other local elections across the city. But it was called off days before the polls after the death of Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) candidate Dave Anderson.

People living in the area who are registered to vote will get a poll card after May 16, next week. The deadline to register to vote in this by-election is June 4.
