A Coventry Greggs has been forced to hire a security guard due to 'high levels of shoplifting.' He has been stationed at the theft-hit store in Foleshill.

Firm Lodge Security has been hired by Greggs to combat thefts and anti-social behaviour which are believed to be plaguing the store on Foleshill Road. It is hoped this will stop people from 'stealing food and causing trouble.'

A guard from Lodge Security will remain stationed inside the city-based store between 6.30am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday and from 7.30am to 5pm on Sundays. A guard has been seen standing next to where the food is being served.

Areas hit by thefts are likely to see 'additional security measures' in the coming months, it is understood. Greggs on Foleshill Road has been plagued by shoplifting and anti-social behaviour for many years with the measures said to be 'needed.'

Greggs is believed to have implemented the measures due to thefts being an 'issue' for retailers across the UK. Guards will be stationed at a number of stores nationwide to 'ensure that staff feel equipped to carry out their work.'

It is not the first time the huge chain has been forced to take action after reports of 'fights' breaking out at a UK-based branch in 2018. Bouncers were tasked with keeping an eye on the Greggs just a five-minute walk away from the home of Millwall FC, The Den.

A Coventry Greggs plagued by 'high levels of shoplifting' will soon be closing for good. Greggs on Foleshill Road will shut its doors just after Christmas.

Greggs told CoventryLive that the Foleshill-based bakery, which has a 5-star hygiene rating, would be shutting on Saturday, January 4. Staff will be relocated to nearby stores in the city, including Arena Shopping Park.

CoventryLive reported earlier this year that a guard had been hired at the Foleshill Greggs to combat 'high levels of shoplifting.' He was seen at the theft-hit store in April.

Firm Lodge Security was hired to combat thefts and antisocial behaviour plaguing the long-established store on Foleshill Road. Now, just eight months later, they have announced that they will be closing their doors for good.

Staff have placed a sign in the window of the Foleshill Greggs that says: 'Sorry, we are closing on January 4, 2025. Your nearest shop is 118/120 Jubilee Crescent, Radford.'

Customers have been told to visit nearby Greggs in Jubilee Crescent, Arena Shopping Park, and Walsgrave Road. Others can be found in the city centre, including on Broadgate, Smithford Way, and Ironmonger Row.
