An empty and "run-down" Coventry pub will be flattened to make way for flats and a convenience store. The Bear and Staff on Princethorpe Way closed in 2016 and the China Chef takeaway in part of the building shut last May.

The new shop will have 15 full-time employees and open from 6am to 11.30pm daily, according to plans. But two neighbours objected, asking for evidence it is needed and claiming there are three other convenience stores nearby.

"Any more would cause considerable competition," they claimed. However, one person was supportive, saying anything built on the land would be welcome. "The area at the moment is an eyesore, looks like a tip and downgrades the surrounding area in which we live," they said.

The site is opposite three local shops made up of an opticians, a hair salon and a Costcutter, according to Google Maps. Council officers said the site's retail aspect would be acceptable under policy.

They also agreed that the new development would improve the look of the local area as it will replace a "run-down and dilapidated public house," a report said. The council gave the plans the go-ahead last Thursday (21 March.)
