Youngsters from a Coventry primary school have unveiled a new sculpture at the University of Warwick to mark the start of the university's new Springtime Sculpture Trail. The piece was sculpted by acclaimed artist Tine Bech.

Inspired by the challenges of the Covid pandemic, Bech's design reflects the need for communal spaces where individuals can gather, explore, and find support in shared experiences to foster a sense of well-being and community through interactive play with colour. The Year 6 class from Cannon Park Primary have been studying sculpture in their art lessons.

The class visited the campus on Wednesday to admire the most colourful offering of the Springtime Sculpture Trail, which kicks off this weekend, and meet the artist behind the sculpture. Speaking on her inspiration behind the artwork, Tine Bech said: "In an era where shared outdoor spaces have gained heightened significance as communal meeting points due to the pandemic, 'Colour Connection' stands out as a testament to this real need for human connection.

"I'm thrilled to see it be installed at the University of Warwick." The sculpture is to be installed outside University House, a main entry point into the campus and joins more than 25 other artworks that form the University's sculpture park.

Sarah Shalgosky, Principal Curator at the University of Warwick, expressed excitement about the installation. She said: "We believe 'Colour Connection' will positively impact students by providing a visually stimulating environment that encourages interaction and creativity."

The free sculpture trail is open for everyone to enjoy and the Springtime Sculpture Trail guide with tips on how to spot spring nature across campus can be downloaded before visiting. Sarah added: "Colour Connection is made up of clear coloured glass panels and two-way mirrors. It was created by famous artist Tine Bech.

"The design was inspired by the challenges of the Covid pandemic. Bech's work shows the need for places where people can meet, explore, and find comfort in shared experiences. This helps to create a feeling of well-being and community through playing with colour."

The Sculpture Trail is always there at Warwick Arts Centre. This place is at the heart of the University of Warwick's big plan to spend £100million on art.

This includes a building that won an award from RIBA, the Faculty of Arts, and the new Warwick Venice Centre.
