An anonymous donor has come to the rescue of a Coventry charity after it was targeted by heartless thieves. Users of the Coventry Resource Centre for the Blind nearly lost access to the service after a diesel filter was stolen from its minibus

But a total stranger donated almost £3,000 to cover the repairs and get the charity back up to speed. "We're touched and moved without measure," centre manager Hugh Sorrill told the BBC.

Mr Sorrill said he knew of 20 service users who would not be able to make it to the centre in Earlsdon without the minibus. "We're their only contact in the week and we provide the right support that they need," he added.

The Enterprise Club For Disabled People also helped out by lending the charity one of its minibuses. "There are scumbags out there who will steal [people's] lifeline and there are absolute angels who step in," Mr Sorrill added.

"It's sent a whole frisson around the charity about the kindness of people." He also thanked the boss of CG Motors, the garage that repaired the minibus, for 'moving heaven and earth' to find a replacement filter.

The garage manager tracked an original manufacturer's part down to France. It will be shipped over for the repairs, Mr Sorrill said.

"Hopefully they will be repairing it over the weekend," he said. "Otherwise we were looking at three or four weeks without a bus," he added.

The charity is looking at new security arrangements to prevent future thefts.
