Section 60 powers were used last night

Police have used special powers to crack down on reports of disorder in a Coventry suburb. Coventry Police announced last night (Saturday) that they would be using Section 60 powers in Wood End until 7am today (Sunday).

A section 60 authorisation gives police the power to stop and search people and vehicles for offensive weapons without suspicion. The powers can only be used in a specified area for a set period.

A Coventry Police spokesman said the move was used to keep people safe. They added: “It follows recent disorder and this allows us to stop and search people we suspect may be involved in violence involving weapons, without the need to have reasonable grounds.

“As always our focus is to keep everyone safe.”

Two people have been left seriously injured after being stabbed during a reported disorder in Coventry. Officers were called to Honeysuckle Drive at around 4pm on Saturday (February 10).

Cops were also stationed at the junction of Aldermans Green Road and Almond Tree Avenue. A large cordon was erected at the scene while enquiries were carried out on Saturday.

A 19-year-old man was found with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition, said West Midlands Police.

A second man self-presented at hospital with stab injuries. Police said the 18-year-old also remains in hospital where he continues to receive treatment for his injuries.

Officers said they were called to reports of disorder at University Hospital Coventry on Clifford Bridge Road at around 7pm on Saturday (February 10). An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, said West Midlands Police.

Two other men, aged 19 and 20, were arrested on suspicion of affray and remain in custody as of Sunday, February 11. Police said they will also be questioned about the disorder on Honeysuckle Drive.

Detective Inspector Rachael Allen, from the Major Crime Team, said: “We are urgently trying to establish what took place yesterday (February 10) and why. If you witnessed the incident on Honeysuckle Drive or have any information, I would urge you to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

“We would ask anybody who can help our investigation to contact us Live Chat on our website, or by calling 101, and quote log 2909 of February 10.”
