Teenagers have been deliberately setting rubbish alight and calling 999 in Wood End, firefighters from Foleshill Fire Station said
Stock photoYobs are causing chaos in one city neighbourhood - 'setting rubbish alight and hurling objects at firefighters.' Crews were attacked and verbally abused yesterday evening in Wood End.
Firefighters from Foleshill Fire Station were called to the scene of a large fire on Hillmorton Road. Rubbish was found to have been deliberately set alight at around 7pm.
Crews attempted to extinguish the blaze but were attacked by a group of teenagers who are believed to be behind a series of similar incidents in Wood End. Objects, such as stones, bottles and eggs, were thrown in the latest attack which has now been deemed 'unacceptable.'
A spokesman for Foleshill Fire Station told CoventryLive: “We attended an incident on Hillmorton Road in Wood End last night (Friday, November 10) which was a large pile of rubbish on fire and I would say there were about 15 teenagers who proceeded to verbally and physically abuse our crews.”
Police are said to have attended but the group had fled by the time they arrived. Thankfully, nobody was injured, bu the incidents are said to be getting 'out of hand.'
Firefighters say there has been a spate of incidents over the past two weeks with various objects, including fireworks, being hurled at them on Hillmorton Road and Lillington Road. They say youths have set rubbish and wheelie bins alight with at least five incidents reported in the past week in Wood End.
“It is becoming quite an issue for us and is extremely frustrating. Obviously, the setting of deliberate fires in the first place is time-consuming and takes up resources, especially as we currently have to send two fire engines to that area of the city due to the attacks on crews, but also to have that while we are trying to extinguish those fires is just not acceptable,” the spokesman said.
He added: “It took up a lot of time and obviously we do not want to be getting assaulted while we are working. It also meant that one fire engine was unavailable for a short period due to our uniform being contaminated.”
