Ten-hour armed stand-off at Nuneaton flats as police confirm eight arrests

An armed stand-off broke out between police and burglary suspects holed-up in flats in Nuneaton. The siege at Balmoral Court in Hilary Road lasted more than ten hours, with the area being cordoned off and people being urged to stay away.

It came to an end at just after 1.30pm this afternoon, Thursday, October 19 when five people, who have not been identified, surrendered themselves to police. There are currently eight people in custody in relation to the incident, which first started at just before midnight last night (October 18).

A Warwickshire Police spokesman said a break-in was reported on nearby Cedar Road, allegedly involving a male with a long-bladed weapon and a female. A pair matching the description were later seen walking down a nearby road and were believed to have entered a flat at Balmoral Court.

Police officers tried to make an arrest at the flat, at which point a stand-off took place. Armed officers were called in and it led to a cordon being thrown around the area for most of the day.

A Warwickshire Police spokesman said that at 12.30am, a 19-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was arrested after leaving the address with a deep injury to her leg. She was taken to hospital, but a number of individuals reportedly remained inside.

This stand-off continued until 1pm this afternoon, when police say five people surrendered from the house before being taken into custody. Two 16-year-old males have also been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary following this incident.

All are now being questioned in custody.
