A new pop-up shop with a difference will open its doors in Nuneaton town centre. 'Grit Central' is understood to be opening in a former estate agents in Coventry Street.

It will be a base for a new arts project that is about to launch across the borough. Back in February, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council received £750,000 from the Arts Council England for a 'Creative Explorers' scheme.

This project is set to get under way from Wednesday, October 25 and will see the pop-up shop open as an arts destination, where residents can find out more about the scheme. CoventryLive understands that through 'Creative Explorers' there will be large events staged in the borough's biggest parks - Riversley Park and the Miners Welfare Park.

The 'Creative Explorers' scheme is one of two projects that are being launched with a new cultural arts strategy in the borough. It comes after it was found that the arts, and access to it, was especially low in the two towns.

Councillor Sue Markham, cabinet member for public services at the Town Hall, said: "Adopting a Cultural Strategy is so important, especially as the effects of Covid are still being felt. The borough council recognises the contribution of the arts to the quality of life of both the individual and the community, and feedback we received during the Towns Fund bid showed that our residents felt the same.

“People need to feel connected, and our aim is to promote access to, and participation in, the arts for all members of the Nuneaton and Bedworth community. This value of cultural activity will help us to safeguard existing resources and identify routes to further investment for the future."

The new pop-up shop in Coventry is set to open. Nuneaton Market will host extra stalls offering fun activities from 1.30pm.

Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery will be also hosting a fun 'make and take' activity, while Bedworth’s Imagine Bamboo project will also be offering people the chance to join in making bamboo art and the council's sports development team will be getting people hula hooping.

That's exactly what the people of Nuneaton want right now, "a new cultural arts strategy". :clown:
