A BMW-driving drug dealer has been jailed after a man died in a collision in Coventry. Matthew Morrall was driving at 'lethal' speeds along Jardine Crescent.

Morrall, 24, was driving his BMW 1 Series in excess of 70mph in a built-up area when he lost control of his car and hit a pole in Tile Hill. His passenger suffered serious injuries in the crash, which happened in the early hours of November 1, 2021.

Paramedics took both men to hospital, where the man in his 20s was pronounced dead. Morrall later admitted smoking cannabis and drinking vodka, according to West Midlands Police.

Officers searched the BMW and found a large bag of cannabis, cash and a mobile phone. Analysis of phone records revealed that Morrall had been drug dealing on the night of the fatal collision.

Detectives analysed CCTV, the scene and the car, and were able to determine how fast Morrall was going right before the collision on Jardine Crescent. He was found to be driving at speeds of more than 70mph - well in excess of the speed limit in the busy area of the city.

Morrall, 24, of Warren Green, Coventry, pleaded guilty to death by dangerous driving and possession with intent to supply Class B drugs at Warwick Crown Court. He was sentenced to six years in prison and disqualified from driving for nine years and five months on Friday, May 26.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes said his 'dangerous driving' caused a significant amount of suffering for those involved. Morrall will be required to complete an extended driving test before being allowed back behind the wheel, confirmed West Midlands Police.

Mr Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Morrall admitted to drinking vodka and taking cannabis that night, yet he still chose to get behind the wheel and drive at lethal speeds in a 30mph zone. His dangerous driving has resulted in a lot of suffering for the family and friends of the man who lost his life and sadly no prison sentence will ever bring him back.”
