Former mayor who raised £60k for cherished Nuneaton hospice dies

A former Nuneaton and Bedworth Mayor who raised £60k for the borough's cherished hospice has sadly passed away. It has been revealed that Mick Jones, who was the borough's first citizen from 1990 to 1991, has died.

The 74-year-old from Nuneaton leaves behind his wife Jane and son Andrew. He was a Galley Common ward representative at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council.

He dedicated his year in the mayoral chains to raising money for the Mary Ann Evans Hospice. He followed in the footsteps of a previous mayor, the late Nuneaton MP Bill Olner, who helped to set up the facility.

His appeal raised £60,000, something he said at the time was down to the generosity of local people. "The hospice provides a real service to the people of the borough who have always shown unsurpassed generosity," he previously said.

The former councillor's contribution to the borough has been recognised by the Town Hall. The council's deputy leader, councillor Clare Golby, led tributes to him, saying: "It’s always sad to hear of past councillors passing away.

"Mick Jones put his mayoral year to very good use, raising a lot of money for a local cherished institution. Many people will have been very thankful for his contribution to our borough.

"On behalf of the council and the wider borough, I'd like to offer our condolences to ex-mayor Jones' family and friends."
