Contractors have done little to stop standing water in St James Lane, Willenhall

A Coventry resident claims a pavement and part of the adjoining road has been left submerged thanks to a botched council job.

Baffled resident Michael Espley said he was astounded at the 'shoddy repairs' by Coventry City Council contractors that have done nothing to alleviate flooding in St James Lane, Willenhall. It's claimed workmen were called out to fix the issue of standing water on the pavement near to the railway bridge.

It's thought the pavement refurb had initially solved the problem of flooding until workmen returned the very next day to install dropped kerbs nearby. "This meant, of course, digging up the previously laid new tarmac," Mr Aspley told CoventryLive.

"This is when the ironwork was lifted, to facilitate the dropped kerbs. Upon refitting said ironwork it is now higher than the surrounding road surface. A basic physics situation - consequently pedestrians are having to risk inundation.

"Opinion? Shoddy supervision or completely relaxed planning." Mr Aspley shared a picture of the flooding taken on the morning of Sunday, April 23, after the new dropped kerbs and drain had been installed.

Water can be seen pooled either side of the new drain. Mr Aspley said work on the pavement upgrade started during the early part of March and "went on for some weeks", all at the taxpayers' expense "with traffic control in place".

"Prior to the work starting there had, in my knowledge, been a water hazard for pedestrians during bad weather, but only towards the rail bridge," he said. "Approximately 30 yards from the bridge, pedestrians had to dodge smartly between vehicles traveling toward Willenhall to avoiding getting wet.

"Now they have no chance as the water is as you saw in the pictures. I have informed the city council on two occasions that the water is not draining as a drain grating has been fixed higher than the road surface."

CoventryLive approached the city council for comment but has not received a response.

Can we hear O'Boyle's excuses on this?
