A £6.8m scheme to install two lifts at a railway station will begin on Monday and take the rest of the year to finish.

The project at Warwick station is aimed at helping passengers, including those with reduced mobility, to get to platforms 1 and 2, Network Rail said.

It will mean a subway between the platforms will close from 3 March with a diversion signposted, it added.

Platform 1 will also be shortened from 25 February for the works.

Network Rail said the installation will also mean one fewer train calling at Warwick a day.

The services affected, which run to Birmingham Snow Hill, will continue to call at nearby Warwick Parkway and Leamington Spa.

I fail to see how this is an improvement?

Most stations have replaced lifts with subways.

Warwick railway station passengers urged to avoid track shortcut

Passengers at a railway station have been urged to use proper platform access points after a rise in trespassers cutting across tracks.

The subway linking platforms at Warwick station closed in March as part of work to install two lifts.

A signposted walking route was put in place to provide alternative and safe access to trains.

But Network Rail said there had been 10 reported cases of people "dangerously" crossing lines as a shortcut.

Chris Halpin from Network Rail said it was "unacceptable" behaviour and "not worth the risk" where dozens of trains reached speeds of 100mph.

He urged passengers to avoid taking the "unbelievably dangerous" shortcut and advised them to allow extra time for their journeys.

"It's amazing really that people will risk their lives in this way," he added.

The lifts being installed are part of a £6.8m scheme aimed at improving accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility or those with pushchairs.

The installation is due to be completed by the end of 2023.

Councillor John Holland from Warwickshire County Council, who has been campaigning for the lifts scheme for several years, told BBC CWR there was "absolutely no excuse" for "dangerous behaviour".

He urged passengers to report any trespassers to station staff or authorities.

Warwick rail station upgrade paused as Victorian foundations found

A revamp of a train station has been paused after the Victorian remains of the original station were found.

Crews were midway through installing new lift shafts at Warwick's station as part of a £6.8m accessibility upgrade.

The foundations are thought to be part of the first station which was built in 1852, but destroyed by a fire 42 years later.

Network Rail has apologised for the unexpected setback.

The rail operator said the remains were not recorded in the plans for the current station, which was built 129 years ago, and it was constructed on top of the original station's 1852 foundations.

Engineers are now working to redesign the lift shafts, which would have gone down to the subway to provide step free access for both of the station's platforms.

The subway will remain closed with diversions in place for passengers, Network Rail said.

Platform one has been temporarily shortened to allow construction to take place while trains continue to run.

This has resulted in one less train a day calling at Warwick, but those services continue to call at Warwick Parkway and Leamington Spa.

The installation was due to be completed by the end of 2023.

"We know how much the accessibility upgrades mean to people in Warwick and we're sorry this unexpected setback means the building work has to be paused," said Elinor Weymouth, scheme project manager for Network Rail.

They didn't expect to find old foundations on the site of a 129 year building?

It's been a complete fiasco since the work first started. :fuming:
