Six Coventry homes used to grow cannabis have now been closed to the public to protect neighbours and crack down on the illegal activity. No one will be able to go in or out of the houses for the next three months due to the new closure orders announced by the council today (24 January.)

The homes are all on Bolingbroke Road in Stoke. They are owned by members of the same family, the council said.

Cannabis plants were discovered in the properties over the last year and a half. Officials say discoveries were sometimes made more than once.

Inspector Alex Heeley, from the Coventry Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: "These properties have been the subject of police interest for some time, so taking actions like these will help protect the community. It is vital residents and communities let us know if there are any concerns in their neighbourhoods.

"This will make it easier for us to take quick and decisive action in these cases. We take drug cultivation and illegal use of premises incredibly seriously and will move to take action against this kind of offending where and when we find it."

People living next to cannabis farms are put at risk of fire from by-passed electrics and massive heat lamps. There is also a threat of aggravated burglaries from rival gangs.

Coventry council took court action after seeing evidence from police. It is believed to be the first time the power has been used for this purpose in the West Midlands.

The council said the court was satisfied the homes might be used to grow cannabis again. They said the court also recognised the possible risk to neighbours.

The closures will cost owners more than £10,000, the council said. Cllr Abdul Khan, Cabinet Member for Policing and Equalities, said: "This is an excellent example of the partnership work across Council services and West Midlands Police and I’d like to thank everyone for their efforts.

"We believe as a minimum it shows negligence on the part of the property owners and we hope it sends a clear message to the very small number of owners who try to bypass the law that they will not get away with it."
