A man was rushed to hospital after being hit over the head with what is believed to be a hammer during a violent disorder in Coventry. A large number of police descended on The Burges last night (Wednesday, January 18).

West Midlands Police today (January 19) confirmed that a disorder broke out near KFC on Cross Cheaping shortly after 6pm. Two ambulances and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance attended the scene on the busy city centre street.

A man was taken to hospital with potentially life-changing injuries after being hit on the head with a weapon believed to be a hammer. Another man received treatment at the scene and was discharged shortly after.

Officers quickly arrested a man on suspicion of wounding. Detectives have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the violent disorder.

Suspected gunman named and charged over violent disorder in Cross Cheaping

A man has been charged following a violent disorder in Coventry. A brawl broke out outside KFC on Cross Cheaping on Wednesday (January 18).

Police swarmed the city centre street shortly after 6pm before a number of officers combed the scene and surrounding area for evidence. A man was taken to hospital with potentially life-changing injuries after he was hit over the head with a weapon.

Daniel Mutton, 20, has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of a firearm, possession of a bladed or pointed article in public and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He was remanded to appear at Coventry Magistrates' Court today (Friday, January 20).

A spokesman for Coventry Police said: "We have charged a man with grievous bodily harm after an incident in Cross Cheaping, Coventry on Wednesday (January 18). Daniel Mutton, aged 20, was charged with section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of a firearm, possession of a bladed or pointed article in public and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place."
