Citizen Housing have said they are considering the future of three tower blocks in Tile Hill

Three Coventry tower blocks look set to be demolished after years of residents dealing with 'horrendous' mould, damp and flooding. Citizen Housing recently confirmed that they are reviewing the future of the flats on Ferrers Close in Tile Hill.

In a letter seen by CoventryLive, the housing company admitted that the flats 'require significant improvement works.' Citizen added they are aware that the properties are difficult to heat and poorly insulated.

Kitchens are said to be 'too small' and 'not fit for purpose' and the car parking and roads outside the blocks were described as being in a 'poor condition.' Citizen went on to say that they have considered a range of options such as carrying out repair works and demolishing the three tower blocks in Tile Hill.

Citizen said they have estimated the cost to carry out the repair works and believe the significant level of investment required is not 'value for money.' Residents are likely to be rehoused, with all three blocks set to be demolished later this year. A final decision will be made on March 27, 2023.

CoventryLive previously spoke to residents who had reached their wits' end with huge patches of thick black mould covering their walls and soaked carpets from constant flooding. Tenant Laura Jones, 26, previously said her children have been affected by the problems within the property, with her eight-year-old son developing breathing problems from years of exposure to damp and mould.

In a letter seen by CoventryLive, the housing company told residents on Friday (January 13): “I am writing to inform you that we have been reviewing the future of three tower blocks at Ferrers Close. We are committed to investing in our homes and the environment, and we want you to ensure that your home is safe, warm and energy efficient for you and your family to live in.

“Based on information that we hold about the condition of the blocks we know that the flats require significant improvement works both internally and externally. We know that homes in these blocks can be difficult to heat and that the insulation to the properties needs to be improved.

“We are also aware that the kitchens are too small and not fit for purpose and that the car parking and roads outside the blocks are in a poor condition and in need of repair. We have considered a range of options including carrying out major internal and external improvements to rehousing you and demolishing the blocks.

“We have estimated the cost to carry out the improvements, and we believe that the significant level of investment required is not value for money or best use of resources. Therefore, and after much consideration, our preferred option is to rehouse you and demolish all three blocks. Whilst this is our preferred option, it is important that we listen to your views and take these into account when we report our recommendations to our board.”

Residents are likely to be rehoused, with all three blocks set to be demolished later this year.

I seriously doubt that as they've yet to rehouse some tenants in Spon End almost two and a half years after that was first announced.

Where are we going to rehouse all these people? We simply don't have the available housing stock.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

'Horrendous' Coventry tower blocks to be demolished

A decrepit set of tower blocks are set to be demolished in Coventry. Citizen Housing has confirmed that three blocks of flats will be bulldozed in Tile Hill.

A number of brand-new homes will then be built on the land. All current residents will be rehoused in the new development on Ferrers Close.

Tenants will be moved out of the flats in June 2023. It will take around 18 months to two years to build the 'energy efficient homes,' the housing company said.

Citizen Housing said 85 per cent of residents supported the redevelopment after complaints of 'horrendous damp and mould.' CoventryLive previously spoke to residents who had reached their wits' end with huge patches of thick black mould covering their walls and soaked carpets from constant flooding.

A letter seen by CoventryLive reads: “I am writing to update you on the outcome of the recent customer consultation and the decision that has been taken by the Citizen Board at their meeting on March 27, 2023. Based on recommendations and feedback from customers, Citizen has decided that customers from all three blocks in Ferrers Close will be rehoused and the blocks will be demolished, following which we will progress with our plans to redevelop the area and build new homes.

“All customer views were considered by the Citizen Board so thank you to everyone who took part in the consultation. 85 per cent of you supported the rehousing of residents and the demolition of the blocks.

“We are aiming to start the rehousing programme in June 2023. Based on our experience of delivering similar projects, this will take around 18 months to two years to complete and you will be fully supported through the process.”

Director of Regeneration at Citizen Kevin Roach previously said: “We are committed to investing and improving our homes to a good quality and that they are safe, warm and energy efficient for our customers to live in. We know that homes in these blocks can be difficult to heat and the insulation to the properties needs to be improved.

“We are also aware some rooms are too small and can't accommodate modern facilities. The environment, car parking and roads around the blocks are also in a poor condition and in need of investment.

“We've estimated the cost to carry out the improvements, and we believe that the significant level of investment required is not value for money or best use of resources. Therefore, after much consideration, our preferred option is to rehouse customers and demolish all three blocks.”
