A family were hospitalised after blaze at flat on the outskirts of Coventry city centre. An adult and four children were taken to the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for assessment following the fire in Sherbourne Street, Coventry.

A total of 14 firefighters initially responded to the 999 call at just after 11pm last night (November 15). There was a report of a blaze at a three-storey, low rise block of flats.

While some of the crews evacuated the building, others raised the alarm with West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS). A WMAS spokesman said two ambulances, a paramedic officer, HART paramedics and a critical care car from the Air Ambulance Service attended the scene.

"Five patients were assessed by ambulance staff on scene before being conveyed to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for precautionary checks," the spokesman said. West Midlands Fire Service confirmed that officers wearing Breathing Apparatus (BA) put out the flames using a hose reel.

The fire reportedly started accidentally in a bin room which then spread to a shared porch at the property. Crews were at the scene for more than two hours, ensuring the flames were out and the building was cleared of smoke.

Not what happened at all.

A bin on an outside porch either caught fire or was deliberately set on fire then smoke spread indoors.
