It will be based inside the former Debenhams store on Smithford Way

An Iceland store could be making its way to West Orchards Shopping Centre in Coventry. Plans for huge new signs have been submitted to Coventry City Council.

Shoppers will find the brand-new supermarket near Eurochange and M&S on the ground floor of the shopping centre on Smithford Way. CoventryLive understands that the former Debenhams store will be split into separate units in the coming months.

An application has been made for a brand-new shop sign as well as window vinyls, featuring photographs of strawberries, berries and lollipops. All of the signs will be emblazoned on the front of the supermarket.

Changes to the signage on the side of the shopping centre car park will also go ahead if plans are approved by the local council. A decision is expected to be made on October 27, 2022.

Retailers will be forced out of City Arcade as plans for the City Centre South development move forward. Iceland, on Queen Victoria Road, will therefore be demolished to make way for hundreds of homes, as well as a hotel and cinema.

Shop owners have been left devastated at the prospect of being forced out of City Arcade. Escape Games and Coffee Tots are among the businesses that will be made to leave the shopping centre early next year.

Iceland and West Orchards Shopping Centre have been approached for comment.

Huge new Coventry city centre Iceland store to open at West Orchards Shopping Centre this week

Image

Iceland is opening a huge new store in Coventry city centre this week. £1,000 in vouchers will be given away to the first 100 customers through the door of the 7,000 sq ft shop at West Orchards Shopping Centre.

The store is set to open at 8am on Tuesday (February 7), creating 18 new jobs. It will also stock a range of brands exclusive to Iceland - and sister store The Food Warehouse - including Greggs, TGI Friday’s, Slimming World, Barratts, Harry Ramsden’s, Myprotein, Chiquito and Cathedral City.

The new supermarket is opening in part of the former Debenhams store at the shopping centre. Contractors have been spotted working on the site in recent months.

A sign outside read: "Get ready Coventry... Your new store opens 8am at West Orchards Shopping Centre. Opens 7 February."

Iceland now has more than 950 stores across Britain with plans to open more this year. The Coventry store's opening hours will be Monday to Saturday 8am to 6pm and Sundays 10.30am to 4.30pm.

They're in financial trouble!

Major credit insurer pulls cover for Iceland suppliers over energy costs

Iceland has had its cover pulled from a leading credit insurer as the jump in energy costs piles pressure on the frozen-food retailer.

Credit insurance protects suppliers against the risk of a retailer going bust between the point an order is delivered and payment received, helping to ensure all transactions go through.

It is unusual for credit insurers to target grocery retailers but Iceland’s reliance on large chest freezers means it is disproportionally vulnerable to the rise in energy prices.

The removal of cover can prompt suppliers to demand payment upfront, squeezing a retailer’s cashflow.

It is now understood that the supermarket has entered into agreements with renewable-energy providers to lock in the price of 50 to 65% of its energy requirements for the next 15 years.

The frozen retailer’s energy bill jumped from £70 million to about £155 million this year. Last month Iceland said it plans to scale back the amount of chilled food it sells in an effort to reduce its energy bills.

The supermarket is stocking more room-temperature products instead of chilled, according to managing director Richard Walker.

Iceland is also utilising more modern fridges, putting doors on warehouse fridges and placing solar panels on stores and warehouses to be more energy efficient.

The news comes as Iceland has been named the UK supermarket with the fastest rising prices with a 10.1% increase since January 2022, new research shows.

Shoppers flock to opening of new Iceland store at West Orchards

Image

A huge queue was seen outside a brand-new supermarket in Coventry. Shoppers flocked to the opening of Iceland at West Orchards Shopping Centre.

Iceland, which has opened at the former Debenhams, welcomed customers on Tuesday (February 7). Hundreds turned up to try and win their share of £1000 worth of vouchers with queues stretching along Smithford Way.

Employee Diane, who was worked at the company for over 40 years, cut the ribbon on the new store which opened to the public at 8am. Customers will find brands exclusive to Iceland and The Food Warehouse, such as Greggs, Slimming World, MyProtein and Cathedral City.

Iceland, on Queen Victoria Road, will soon close as plans move forward for City Centre South. Staff from the store are understood to have been relocated to the brand-new store at West Orchards Shopping Centre.

Andy Talbot, Senior Asset Manager at West Orchards Shopping Centre said: “After months of hard work, we are thrilled to welcome Iceland to the West Orchards family. This is the fifth new store to open in the centre since November and it's amazing to see the buzz in the shopping centre.”

A number of new stores have opened at the popular shopping centre in recent months, including Toytown, Francis and Gaye Boutique and One Beyond. Iceland is the latest retailer and has been packed with customers since first opening.

Iceland now has more than 950 stores throughout the country with plans to open more this year. Customers can shop at the brand-new supermarket at West Orchards from Monday to Saturday between 8am and 6pm and Sundays between 10.30am and 4.30pm.

Signs removed from Coventry Iceland store marking the 'end of an era'

Image

Signs have been removed from a much-loved local supermarket following its permanent closure in Coventry. Iceland, on Queen Victoria Road, shut for the final time on Monday, January 6.

Iceland closed for good ahead of the demolition of City Arcade. A number of other city centre businesses will shut as work moves forward for multi-million-pound redevelopment scheme City Centre South.

Shoppers shared their sadness at the closure but said they believe the space was in decline and needs to be regenerated. Denise Stewart said: “End of an era, Iceland sign taken down, remember when it used to be Tesco.”

JoJo Horton said: “I remember walking round there in the '80s with my mum shopping. Going to the little shops in the City Arcade and popping over to the 'new Co-Op.' Totally agree the area needs regenerating as it is old and dated but just holds a lot of memories of time gone by!”

It was Farm Foods originally, then Victor Value before the latter was taken over by Tesco. :geek:
