Forecasts of blisteringly hot weather has led to an Atherstone chippy taking the decision to give its staff the day off. Management at Friendly Place [sic] in Long Street said that the welfare of its staff comes first.

So they will be given the day off and the popular takeaway will not open on Monday July 18 when temperatures are set to reach 36C. The chippy has posted a message to customers to pre-warn them of the closure as well as an explanation why.

"With the weather predicted to hit over 36 degrees on Monday we are giving our staff the day off," the Facebook post reads. "As you can imagine the heat within the shop will be much higher. Enjoy the sun safely ladies."

"Apologies for any inconvenience caused but the welfare of our staff comes first."

This is not the first time that big-hearted chippy owners have stepped in to help staff.

During the heatwave last June, Five Star Fish Bar in Nuneaton took the decision to close its doors for several days. Management explained that the temperature in the shop is always at least 20c more than outside and the heatwave made the working conditions unsafe and unhealthy.
