I'll hazard a guess the man arrested has a long history of mental health problems?

A man has been charged with the murder of a father found with fatal injuries inside a property in Coventry.

Paul Hawkesford-Barnes, 57, (pictured above) died from traumatic injuries to his head and upper body, West Midlands Police said.

A woman in her 90s who was found hurt at the same address on Hopedale Close on Tuesday remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Steven Barnes, 64, has also been charged with her attempted murder.

Detectives said Mr Barnes appeared before magistrates on Monday, was remanded into custody and due to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday.

The partner of Mr Hawkesford-Barnes, from Malvern, Worcestershire, said in a statement the family was "devastated and life will never be the same again".

Coventry man admits killing brother with guitar at their mum's house

A Coventry man has admitted killing his brother with a guitar at their mother’s home. Steven Barnes, 64, of Telfer Road, Radford, pleaded guilty today to the manslaughter of Paul Hawkesford-Barnes, a married father-of-four

He also pleaded guilty to attempted grievous bodily harm of his vulnerable 84-year-old mother. Paul Hawkesford-Barnes, 57, was asleep in bed at his mother’s house in Wyken when he was violently assaulted by his brother.

The horrific attack on March 15 this year resulted in traumatic head, chest and abdominal injuries. Mr Hawkesford-Barnes had been sharing the responsibility of looking after his elderly mother with his two brothers and had stayed overnight to care for her.

Steven Barnes had disagreed with his brothers over the care of their mother and plans had been put in place to relieve him from the pressure of looking after her. Text messages sent on the night of the killing showed Mr Hawkesford-Barnes had been concerned about Steven’s mental state and had even offered to take him to the doctor in the morning.

However, Barnes subjected Mr Hawkesford-Barnes to a sustained and violent assault using the guitar as a weapon. Mr Hawkesford-Barnes was discovered the following morning by a paid carer.

He was taken to hospital where he later died from his injuries. Steven Barnes admitted the charges at a hearing at Warwick Crown Court today. He will be sentenced on November 18.

Coventry man jailed for 20 years after beating brother to death with guitar

A Coventry man has today been sentenced to 20 years behind bars after killing his brother with a guitar in a 'brutal attack' while he was sleeping. Steven Barnes, 64, surrendered himself at Skegness Police Station on March 15 this year.

He handed himself over to police on the same day his 57-year-old brother, Paul Hawkesford-Barnes, was found dead at their mother Irene's home in Coventry. Barnes pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his brother on the grounds of diminished responsibility when he appeared at Warwick Crown Court in September.

The 64-year-old also admitted to assaulting his 84-year-old mother, who has dementia, after the brothers had a disagreement over her care. She suffered facial injuries from the attack.

Their mother has since died, but not as a direct result of her injuries. Paul suffered serious injuries to his head and upper body following the attack and was rushed to hospital after a paid carer saw his state.

Barnes, of Telfer Road, Radford, was sentenced to 20 years in jail at Leamington Justice Centre. In a statement, Paul’s wife Juliet Hawkesford-Barnes said: "Our children and I are truly devastated at the loss of Paul and the unforgivable events that Paul and Irene suffered.

"Paul was a friendly, loyal and funny person with a huge personality. His death has left a huge hole in the lives of our family and many of his friends.

"We would like to thank West Midlands Police and Victim Support for all their hard work, guidance and support during these terrible months. As a family we ask that our privacy is respected as we grieve and deal with this traumatic loss."

Detective Inspector Ranj Sangha, from the force's homicide team, added: "What happened that night has ripped apart a family. It's hard to imagine the pain and suffering they've all experienced at the loss of Paul and Irene.

"This was a brutal attack on Paul and what happened to him, along with her own recollections of what went on, will undoubtedly have impacted upon Irene. Our thoughts remain with everyone who has been affected by this tragedy."
