Random drugs checks for all council staff after alleged incidents at Nuneaton depot

Random drugs checks will be carried out on all council staff after alleged incidents at a Nuneaton depot.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council plans to carry out random substance testing of all of its employees.

It is not a new policy, it has been in place for some time - except it has not been actioned.

But the ruling Conservatives have decided to bring back the random checks.

One of the reasons behind this is due to allegations of drug use and drug dealing at the council's Gresham Road depot.

An anonymous whistleblower contacted CoventryLive with details alleging a number of illegal activities at the depot back in October last year.

At the time, the council said investigations into the allegations would be made.

Now there is a proposal in the Conservative budget to introduce random checks on all staff, not just those at the depot.

For the tests to be carried would come at a cost of £9,000.

A decision on whether this proposal, as well as the budget itself, is given the go-ahead will be made at the annual council tax setting meeting next week.

It will be held from 6pm in the main council chamber at the Town Hall on Monday, February 14.

Hopefully to also apply to managerial staff and councillors? :stir:
