I put mine in just before midnight, but my supplier had said that they wouldn't increase prices before 00:00 on the 2nd. - That puzzled me and is why the military doesn't use 00:00. - Midnight on which day?

Rishi Sunak vetoed government plan to ease pain from soaring energy bills, leak reveals

Rishi Sunak rejected proposals from a fellow cabinet minister to give more help to families hit by soaring home energy bills, a leaked document reveals.

The chancellor was urged to rethink a £200 loan that households will receive in the autumn, amid widespread criticism that the “heat now, pay later” scheme will pile up further debt.

The Department for Business put forward three options to ease the cost of living crisis, as part of the energy security strategy that aims to wean the UK off foreign fossil fuels.

Kwasi Kwarteng’s department suggested increasing the £200 payment to “£500 or more”, either for all households or for the poorest, an early draft obtained by the i newspaper shows. A second option would have delayed repayment of the £200, which the Treasury is saying must be repaid at the rate of £40 a year over the following five years.

Third, the business secretary’s officials proposed exempting the poorest homes from the need to repay at all, turning the loan into a grant.

A Treasury spokesperson did not dispute that the proposals had been rejected, after they did not appear in the strategy – which is under fire for failing to offer any immediate help with bills.

Mr Kwarteng admitted it would be at least “two or three years” before new infrastructure investments would have any impact on soaring fuel costs.

The price cap on annual domestic bills leapt by almost £700 this month to nearly £2000, and is expected to soar by up to a further £1,000 in the autumn.

Asked if Mr Sunak had rejected the proposed rethink, a Treasury spokesperson told The Independent: “We are not commenting on leaked documents.”

This £200 per household amounts to nothing more than an injection of cash to the already very profitable and greedy energy companies. I wonder how long before the great unwashed wake up and realise that they are, yet again, being shafted by that awfully nice Mr Sunak on behalf of his rich buddies?

Energy rebate to hit Coventry residents' bank accounts next week say council

Image

Around 87,000 Coventry households will receive an energy rebate next week. Coventry City Council (CCC) have announced residents will get a £150 payment as a way of helping with the rising energy bills crisis.

The payment will come from the UK government but is administered by the city council to households in tax bands A - D. Those entitled to the one-off payment will not have to pay it back, says the council.

The payment will be made to the bank account responsible for paying council tax. They will also only be automatically paid to those who pay via direct debit.

For residents who don't pay their tax via direct debit, they need to fill in a form to qualify. There are about 53,000 households who will need to complete a form.

Barrie Strain, Head of Revenues and Benefits at the Council, said: “Payments to direct debit council tax bill payers are starting next week. We will also be writing to those households who do not make payments by direct debit.

"The letter will provide a link to a short online form which will allow people to confirm their bank details so we can make the payment to them. Eligible households will start to receive these letters during April and May.

“The application process will be open for a number of weeks and only those who receive letters will need to complete the form. Anyone entitled to the payment who has not received a payment or made an application by the end of the application window will automatically have the payment made to their council tax account so no one will miss out on this money.

“It is really important that we accurately validate contact names and bank details to avoid any errors. That’s why the process will be quicker to direct debit accounts.

“In the meantime, we are encouraging residents not to contact us as we will write to everyone who is entitled to the rebate to explain how they can receive the payment. Everyone entitled to the payment will receive it.”

How the scheme works

  1. Those who pay their council tax by direct debit will receive a payment direct to their bank account from next week, providing that the name on the account matches the liable party for council tax purposes;

  2. Those who do not pay by direct debit will need to complete an online application. Each eligible household will be sent a letter to explain that they should apply online or contact us for an assisted claim. The online system will validate identity and bank details

  3. The application process will be open for a period to be confirmed. However, if an eligible household has not claimed before this date then the Council will credit the council tax account with £150 which can be claimed as a refund or left to reduce the council tax balance.
A council spokesperson said: "The Council will be deploying considerable resources to work through the applications as quickly as possible whilst ensuring processes are robust and mitigate the risk of fraud or error. Senior officers are stressing that people do not need to get in touch with the Council as everyone who is entitled to the £150 energy rebate will receive it."

Why wasn't option 3 simply applied across the board? - Simple and cheap to implement, with virtually no administration costs. Still, this is a local council we're talking about and they just love wasting money! :fuming: :fuming: :fuming:

23,000 receive £150 council tax rebate in Nuneaton and Bedworth - thousands more face wait

Image

A total of 23,000 householders across Nuneaton and Bedworth have received their £150 council tax rebate. Yesterday the council paid £3.45m of the rebate, in a bid to help with crippling energy costs, into the accounts of those in Bands A-D who paid their Direct Debt on April 1.

Councillor Sam Croft, cabinet member for finance at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, told a full council meeting last night (April 20) that the council had paid back £3.45m in the government grant. He explained that council officers are now working on ensuring that those who paid their Council Tax in the middle of the month receive their rebate next

But he warned that thousands more, around 25 per cent of those who live in Band A - D homes, could face a longer wait. This is because those people do not pay by Direct Debit and that will complicate the process of giving back the rebate and may take more time.

"We will be processing the payments for the Council Tax payments that were made in the middle of April shortly. However, to be able to do that, we do need the bank details of our tax payers," he said.

"Twenty-five per cent of our Council Tax A-D payers don't actually pay by Direct Debt, which means we don't have their bank details, so I would encourage all tax payers of the borough to set up a direct debit so that we can make this payment to you." The government created the rebate as a one-off payment to try to offset the rising costs of energy bills in homes across the country.

Payments were due to start this month and the absolute deadline for local authorities to pay the rebate is the start of September. For more information about Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council rebate payments, see the website here.

I used to be Direct Debit payer but I know from past experience they don't keep a record of your bank details if you stop for any reason.
