With rates soaring, the hospitality industry is suffering

New Year's Eve is often one of the most lucrative nights of the year for hospitality venues, but clubs and pubs in Coventry are struggling for staff as Covid-19 cases surge across the city.

The omicron variant has seen positive cases rocket around the UK, which initially raised doubt over what people would be able to do over new year.

But it was announced earlier in the week there would be no new restrictions before 2022, leaving revellers free to choose to go out should they wish.

However, those with plans to celebrate the new year may have a depleted pool of options to choose from, as rising cases has led to a staffing crisis among some city venues.

Nightclub 147, previously known as Scholars, announced this week their New Year's Eve event would no longer go ahead "due to issues outside of our control".

A statement on the club's Facebook page reads: "We regret to announce that due to issues outside of our control we have been forced to close on New Years Eve meaning the Goodbye 2021 event will not go ahead.

"The safety of our customers and staff will always be paramount and there are some complexities that are out of our hands.

"We will make up for this by celebrating the New Year every Saturday night (from the 8th) in January. There will be announcements of free entry and free drink offers incoming in the new year!

"Everyone who has already purchased a ticket for this event will be refunded and rewarded with some freebies for January. Just get in touch via social media or our email to arrange this please!"

Meanwhile, the Longford Engine, who had a band booked for 31 December, has announced their event has been cancelled.

A post on the pub's Facebook page reads : "Due to staffing and security issues the Longford Engine will not be opening New Years Eve evening. We are closing at 7pm.

"This is not a decision we have taken lightly but need to put the security and safety of customers and staff before profit. A million apologies."

The Coventry band set to perform, The Smashed Vinyls, also posted on Facebook, blaming "blooming covid" for the cancellation.

They wrote: "Gutted. Sadly our New Year Bash has had to be cancelled due to that blooming covid. Stay safe everyone. See you all in Jan."

Meanwhile several other pubs have been hit by staff issues in the period between Christmas and New Year.

The Devonshire Arms on Sewall Highway told customers on Tuesday (28 December) they would be closed for the day. Asked if it was due to staff shortages the pub answered yes. The Devon reopens today (29 December) at 12pm.

Meanwhile the Boat Inn, Shilton Lane, where Pete Doherty turned up earlier in the month, has also been forced to close.

On Monday (27 December) the pub wrote on Facebook : "Sorry we have closed today. We have staff with covid, waiting on updates. Sorry for the inconvenience."

Later in the day they added: "We will be closed tomorrow (28 December) and and Wednesday (29 December) due to more covid cases coming to light from customers. We will review things for Thursday. Sorry for the inconvenience."

On Tuesday (28 December) The Gatehouse Tavern announced it would be closing early at 8pm due to "staffing issues".

Last week we told how much-loved the Old Windmill on Spon Street were forced to close due to similar issues over Christmas. The pub is now back open but with limited staff and will welcome customer over New Year's.

It'll be hilarious if Telegraph reporters can't get a drink anywhere because of all the scare stories they've spread about Covid! :hysterical:

A popular Coventry pub has had to close its doors for New Year's Eve due to staff shortages.

The Red Lion in Wall Hill Road posted on its Facebook page yesterday that the pub will be closed and are 'reviewing when we can re-open in line with the ever changing government guidelines.'

There was no indication given on when the Corley Moor pub-restaurant will be reopening its doors.

The statement read: "Due to situations beyond our control & staff shortage we are closed from today.

"We will be constantly reviewing when we can re-open in line with the ever changing government guidelines.

"Sorry to all those tables we've had to cancel this weekend, through to next week.

"Please see our page to keep updated as to when we may re-open.

"Thankyou for all your support."

Customers have been quick to offer their best wishes.

Lisa Cottrell said on the page: "Take care guys... Thank you for everything you have done during this extremely turbulent year to ensure the safety of your customers and staff alike..... While trying to maintain some normality. See you all in the New Year."

Zoe Holloway said: "Stay safe all & we look forward to coming when you’re back open!"

Mike Maddox said: "Sorry to hear this but Liz and I send festive greetings to you all."
