Management say they are 'gutted' to not celebrate Christmas with customers

A popular city centre pub has announced it will close over Christmas due to staff shortages caused by Covid-19.

The Old Windmill on Spon Street is much-loved by drinkers in the city thanks to its friendly atmosphere and historic settings.

But regulars who usually pop in over Christmas will not be able to do so this year as staff having to isolate means the pub would not be able to "deliver the level of service we pride our selves on".

Management took to social media channels to warn customers of the temporary closure - a decision that was not taken likely.

A statement on the The Old Windmill's Facebook page reads: "Like many businesses we have unfortunately suffered with staff shortages due to some of our staff having to isolate due to covid. Meaning we are unable to ensure we have sufficient staff to keep the pub open over the Christmas period and deliver the level of service we pride our selves on and you deserve especially at Christmas.

"Therefore we have made the difficult decision to close for a few days over Christmas. We will now be shut Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

"This will allow us to reopen back at full strength and also mean that our staff can spend some quality time with family over the festive period. We will reopen on the 27th normal opening hours.

"We are so sorry to anyone who was planning to come to the pub over Christmas and we are gutted to not be able to celebrate with you but your safety and the safety of our staff is priority."

The pub dates back hundreds of years and is possibly the oldest in the city. Earlier in the year we voted it one of the cosiest in Coventry.
