New Coventry rail station opening delayed due to leakThe opening of Coventry's brand new rail station building has been delayed as building contractors work to fix a leak.
Councillor Jim O'Boyle CoventryLive today excavations (pictured) are taking place to repair the leak, but as soon as that is fixed, the building will be handed over to rail operator Avanti for opening.
Mr O'Boyle said until those repairs are made there is "no firm or fixed date" for the opening.
The £80m station building was due to open on December 19, but at the time, Coventry City Council said "minor finishing elements" needed to be completed by the building contractor.
Opening was then delayed until the New Year, but so far no date has been provided, as they work to complete the building.
Cllr O'Boyle added: "What happens is as the accountable body we accept as the local authority it is Avanti who will run the station. Quite understandably there's no way we can accept the building until all the relevant things are in place for it to be workable building.
"A scheme of this size, it's irritating but understandable."
He added: "I'm confident it will be done as soon as possible.
"We wouldn't accept a building that isn't ready for complete opening."
The new station building will serve as an addition to, rather than a replacement, for the existing railway station.
It has been created to bring Coventry’s railway services - and the passenger experience in particular - in line with 21st century standards.
