Key buildings in Nuneaton town centre will be demolished as part of huge transformation plans.

Businesses in parts of Bridge Street and Church Street have received letters telling them that they will soon have to move and find new homes.

They have been told that they will need to have moved on by this time next year.

CoventryLive understands the retail units that have been bought by the council include those along the left-hand side of Bridge Street, looking towards the town centre, but does not include Boots.

This is because the units are to be bulldozed as part of the 'Bridge to Living' project, which forms part of the huge Transforming Nuneaton scheme.

As part of the government granting £23m from the Towns Fund to the town, which forms part of the over-arching Transforming Nuneaton programme, there are proposals for the 'Bridge to Living' scheme.

It will see new workspace, work units, homes and a connection along the river from Bridge Street to the George Eliot Gardens.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has said that it will be working to finalise the development scheme and consultation will be undertaken prior to an official planning application being submitted.

In the meantime, the council has pledged to support the businesses that will be forced to move.

Councillor Kristofer Wilson, Town Hall leader, said: "Our priority working with partners is to open up a completely new future for our town centre. Inevitably this means change as we bring new investment to re-shape the buildings here.

“This phase of work is important as it shows again how the town centre will change. A whole section of retail units will be demolished and, along with work on neighbouring land and buildings, will become part of the open space that will help make Nuneaton’s heart a more attractive area to visit.

“We are keen to work with existing traders wherever we can and retain their business here for visitors and local people. Most of all, we are working hard now so we can look forward with optimism to a bright new future for the centre of the town.”
