Thousands flocked to Warwick last night as the town's popular Victorian Evening made a long-awaited return.

Market Place and surroundings streets was transformed into a 19th century fairground with galloper rides, entertainers and a variety of period stalls.

On the main stage a host of acts performed including Warwick School of Dance, the Aylesford School Choir, the St Mary’s Church Choir, Jones Jazz Orchestra, Royal Spa Brass Band and headliner Titine LaVoix.

A Christmas tree display and short carol service was held at St Mary’s Church while at Lord Leycester Hospital there were reindeers in the courtyard and festive merriment.

At Market Hall Museum, a craft market and kids craft activities took place amid the aroma of mince pies and mulled wine and Warwick Visitor Centre turned into a pop-up shop selling Charity Christmas cards.

The event, which was cancelled last year because of the pandemic, launches four days of festive fun with Warwick's Christmas Fair running from today until Sunday.

Warwick's weekly market on Saturday has, however, been cancelled, following a forecast of high winds.

Organisers CJ Events Warwickshire Ltd said: "It is with deep regret that Warwick Market this Saturday, 27th November has been cancelled.

"We have been monitoring the Met Office and gusts of over 45mph are due throughout the day. It would be unsafe to carry on with the market, as safety has to be our priority."

The Winter Food Festival is still scheduled to go ahead on Sunday as part of the Christmas Fair festivities.

Market Hall Museum, which has welcomed more than 1,000 people every single day at previous fairs, is likely to be the epicentre of activity once more.

Children’s craft sessions will be held upstairs on Sunday while mulled wine and mince pies are on offer in the cafe from today until Sunday when reindeers will gather outside the museum.

Continuing the historic theme, Warwick Library's Victorian Week will run until tomorrow, featuring a display of pictures of Victorian Warwick from the Warwickshire Local Studies Collection.
