Tonight's Christmas light switch-on events in Kenilworth have been cancelled.

Warwick District Council took the decision on safety grounds, with high winds having disrupted stalls and marquees erected for the events in Warwick Road and High Street.

The cancellation is a huge blow for residents and traders in the town after last year's event was scrapped because of the pandemic.

A statement released this morning said: "Warwick District Council and partners regret to announce that this evening’s Christmas light switch-on events on Warwick Road and High Street in Kenilworth have been cancelled due to the weather forecast.

"High winds are already causing issues with the erection of stalls and marquees, and with safety being the council’s main priority, the decision has been made to cancel the events.

"The council understands that residents will be disappointed, and will be providing further updates in the next few days regarding plans for Kenilworth’s lights."

The event had been due to start at 5pm with the festive lights being switched on simultaneously in High Street and Warwick Road an hour later.

Warwick's Victorian Evening and associated Christmas lights switch-on went ahead as planned last night, attracting hundreds of people to the town centre.
