Rail bosses have apologised for the 'strange' noisy works which woke residents in Nuneaton in the middle of the night.

Confused householders took to social media to report the strange sounds, which woke them from their sleep.

They said that the 'weird' noise in the Purcell Avenue started at around 1.20am and lasted for around ten minutes.

One resident suggested that it was due to works on the main railway line nearby.

CoventryLive contacted Network Rail and a spokesperson apologised for the works and said they appreciate it is frustrating 'not getting a good night's sleep'.

"We’re sorry that Purcell Avenue residents were disturbed when we carried out vital maintenance work on the railway in the early hours of September 20," the spokesperson said.

"We were replacing and maintaining the ballast – the stones which the tracks sit on – which is essential to help run a safe and reliable railway.

"The machine used travels over long distances on any given night which is why we can’t always notify residents in advance. We completely appreciate how frustrating it is to not get a good night’s sleep. Unfortunately, this work has to be done at night when passenger trains aren’t running on the railway network."
