A midwife was attacked by a group of people who pelted her with eggs and flour while she was on her way to visit a patient.

Laney Holland, 47, was driving down Hillmorton Road and as she approached the junction with Lillington Road, had to slow down due to water on the road caused by a fire hydrant which had been opened.

She was driving her husband's convertible Mercedes with the top down due to the heat and as she reached the Lillington Road junction, the group started throwing eggs and flour at her and the car.

Mrs Holland, who works as as an NHS midwife in the Complex Community Team providing care for some of the most vulnerable pregnant women in Coventry, was attacked at around 3.40pm on Wednesday.

She said: "I was finishing one of the busiest days ever, I'd been on six visits across the city and was just heading to my last one.

"It just left me in shock, more than anything, when it first happened.

"I pulled over to try and put the roof back up but they just kept throwing things at me - flour, eggs and bottles and I think water from the fire hydrant.

"I was left covered in eggs and soaking wet."

Mrs Holland, who lives in Northampton, called the police immediately following the incident and then drove to the house of her last patient for the day.

She said: "When they saw me, they asked what happened and I told them.

"I think I may have still been in shock but they invited me in to clean up.

"I was very shaken up by it all and the car is completely ruined."
