Concerns have been raised over the staffing levels on the maternity ward at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW).

There have been reports of women waiting more than 12 hours to be seen by doctors last week.

It is also claimed they were also unable to leave without it meaning they would lose their place in the queue and have to start the process from the start.

The mother of a woman who visited the hospital last week, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "My daughter was 38 weeks pregnant and went to the ward on Tuesday for a growth scan at around midday.

"The midwife came in and said that a doctor would see her shortly as they had concerns about excess fluid but a doctor didn't come until around 5.45pm and then rushed off quickly when he was called for surgery.

"It wasn't until 11.45pm that she was seen by another doctor who said that she could go home and there were no concerns and to come back in a few days."

Her daughter wasn't the only one waiting, with another woman saying she had to wait for 13 hours and some women who were in the queue left due to the time taken.

She added: "I also spoke to someone I know who works in the hospital and they said they were concerned about staffing levels to the point that a meeting had been called and that it was at 'crisis point'."
