Boy racers have turned a residential road in Coventry into a “race zone”, residents say.

Cars, off-road bikes and even quad bikes now tear down Parkville Highwayon a regular basis, said Anne Veasey.

Ms Veasey has lived on the road in Holbrooks for seven years but said the problem has only got worse.

She said the issue is compounded by the fact it is being used as a cut-through.

A petition with 34 signatures has now called for Coventry City Council to take action by installing traffic calming measures, with a crossing point or even average speed cameras seen as a potential solution.

Ms Veasey said: “The volume of traffic is not the issue – we all drive on roads we don’t live on.

“However, the speed of the traffic down our road, possibly because it’s wider, is a concern.

“There is a pre-school nursery in the middle of the road and parents quite often need to cross the road with their young children to get to the nursery. There are also two local primary schools and two local secondary schools in the area and the entries between the houses link the roads making it an ideal crossing spot for many more children and parents.

“This road has unfortunately become a race zone for cars and off-road bikes and even quad bikes.

“I personally feel the lack of speed cameras on Beake Avenue contributes to this as people fly up our road from Beake Avenue and don’t slow down.”

Ms Veasey said an average speed camera scheme on Parkville Highway, Beake Avenue, Roland Avenue and Hen Lane would be an ideal solution.

The problem was raised by Holbrook councillor Rachel Lancaster at full council this month.

She said: “I have been contacted by several residents who have advised me there are significant problems with both speeding traffic and also large HGVs ignoring the weight limit on this stretch of road.

“The centre is also used as a cut through for President Kennedy Secondary School and Parkgate Primary School and there’s also a nursery where cars tend to speed, so it’s used by a significant proportion of children to get to school.”

The call for action will be taken to the cabinet member for city services, Cllr Pat Hetherton, at a later date.
