Residents in Coventry suffered hours of power blackouts on Thursday (June 24) after an underground fire.

Firefighters were called to reports of black smoke billowing from under the ground.

Upon arrival they discovered an electricity box had been on fire.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "We were called at 3.08pm on 24 June to Hen Lane in Rowley’s Green.

"The initial call said black smoke was coming possibly from underneath the road junction.

"Three firefighters Binley Fire Station in a brigade response vehicle attended the scene. They asked the electricity board to attend as it looks like it was an electricity junction box.

"Fire fighters removed a manhole cover and there were signs of a fire but it was out when they arrived. The road was cordoned off out of safety and Western Power attended and they isolated the box."

Despite the fire being out, the flames had caused enough damage to affect power in the area, and social media was alight on Thursday evening with residents discussing issues with electricity.

People living in Holbrooks, Radford, Rowley's Green, Longford and Aldermans Green experienced issues to varying degrees.

While some residents noticed regular flickering of their lights, others had no power at all for several hours.

However, Western Power has confirmed their were two separate faults, including the fire under Hen Lane, that contributed to power issues in the city.
