It would give people from the north of town easier access to the station

Rail campaigners are continuing to push for a much-needed second entrance at Nuneaton Railway Station.

Under the helm of new leadership the Nuneaton, Bedworth and Hinckley Rail Users Group aim to get a better service for those who use the station, both now and in the future.

Getting more services back on track is a priority for Stu Anderson and Dave Kane, who have taken over as joint leaders of the group from Mark Whitelegg.

On top of this, getting a second entrance to the station is also key for the duo.

Creating a new entrance to the station from Weddington Terrace has long been on people's wish-lists, not only to reduce congestion at the front entrance but to give people who live on the north side of town easier access.

Discussions have been held in the past and a meeting did take place between some of the key players - Network Rail, West Midlands Trains and Warwickshire County Council about the issue.

It was agreed that a feasibility study would be undertaken - but has been hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

However, it is very much still on the agenda for the rail users group according to Stu Anderson, who said: "I'm aware we are awaiting a feasibility study on the entrance to Weddington Road however this was put off due to Covid-19, we will continue to push for this to completed by WCC/Network Rail.

"We will continue to work with the relevant authorities."

Speaking about the future of the group, under the new leadership, he added: "We are able to continue to campaign for better rail service’s, faster journey times and a better all round travelling experience, the group have always put rail users at the forefront of everything they do and we are proud to continue that strong tradition and work with our stakeholders to have a better rail service that Nuneaton, Bedworth and Hinckley fully deserve."

The group plans to hold a number of online meetings in the future.

Coventry station had a second entrance at one time, it even had it's own booking office! It was on the south side of the station and connected by a long ramp from Warwick Road to the Birmingham platform. As far as I can tell though it was only used on special occasions such as holiday excursions and royal visits, the rest of the time it was kept locked.
