'Best quality' local produce will be celebrated in a unique event held on a historic Coventry city centre street.

A section of Spon Street will be closed between 10am and 8pm on Sunday, May 30 for the first Spon Street Farmers' Market.

Street food and beverage vendors, craft producers, retailers and entertainment will be in place celebrating the best Coventry and Warwickshire has to offer.

Already confirmed to be attending are local producers offering brownies, preserves, peanut butter, honey and pizza.

"The traders on Spon Street have held multiple meetings and everyone is in agreement, we want to make Spon Street more of a destination," said Luke Truslove, owner of The Green Dragon in Spon Street.

"This year is the City of Culture and our section of Coventry is oozing with history and culture, so we decided to act and organise something for ourselves."

He added: "The council are putting the Spon Gate back so we can close off the road so it's fully pedestrianised."

The market is hoping to attract 30 stalls of local artisan and craft producers.

Mr Truslove added: "We're hoping to create something similar to Broadway market in London.

"There's so many great independent craft/artisan producers in the region, we want to bring them into one place, in our unique area of the city.

"If our first even is successful we hope to hold more and make it a regular thing, building up to a Christmas market."

When I was a kid there were so many food shops in Spon Street I could still smell them after I got home!

I seriously doubt that since it was medieval stone building which was blown up by Royalists during the English Civil War! :clown:

Hugely popular Coventry market set to make a comeback

The date for a third installment of an increasingly popular market in Coventry has been set.

Spon Street has twice been turned into a market selling artisanal food, drink and crafts. Firstly on the May Bank Holiday weekend and then again in June.

More than 10,000 were in attendance across the first two events, prompting a third one to be organised.

The Spon Street Maker's Market will be returning on Sunday, July 25 from 10am until 4pm.

"We're really pleased with how the community has responded to the market across our first two events," said organiser Luke Truslove.

"The idea was when we got our heads together and set about creating a market was to celebrate the many fine independent makers in Coventry and Warwickshire, and do it right here in Medieval Spon Street.

"The response has been incredible and that just goes to show how much quality produce we have out there, and how much people want to indulge in and purchase their goods."

The hope now for organisers and stakeholders alike is to make the market a monthly feature.

"I'm hoping it can become an alternative way for people to do their shopping, rather than going to a supermarket," added Mr Truslove. "While it's great for a day out and trying out some of the incredible food and drink that's on offer, people are going away with bags of items to fill their fridges and cupboards.

"That's a direct way of supporting quality, local businesses, many of whom have endured a difficult time of it over the past 12 to 18 months."

The market is looking to add more fruit and vegetable stalls and more traditional farmers' market produce. If any local companies who would like to get involved can still do so by emailing: bar@the-gd.co.uk
