"Coventry city centre car park charges to be cut as lockdown eases"

It is to give a boost to shoppers

Car park charges will be cut in city centre short stay car parks to welcome back shoppers when lockdown restrictions ease.

They come into force from 8am on Monday (April 12) to mark the re-opening of non-essential shops, salons and pubs.

Shoppers parking in West Orchards, Barracks, City Arcade or Spon Street car parks will be able to park longer at a reduced rate.

Those who usually park for more than four hours pay a charge of £10, but the new rate allows parking for up to five hours for £5, six hours for £6, seven hours for £7, up to ten hours.

It is aimed at giving people more time to visit the city centre - and more choice on where to park.

Colin Knight, director of transportation and highways at Coventry City Council, said: “Although it has been a difficult 12 months for all of us, we are looking forward to welcoming shoppers back to the city centre.

“Reducing the cost of parking to allow people to park for longer in the city centre is not only supporting our city centre businesses in their reopening, but it also means we can offer those wanting to do some shopping more choice about where to park when they do visit."

It has been stressed that all shoppers need to stick to social distancing rules and to wear masks, unless exempt, while shopping.

A full list of car parks and the new reduced prices can be found on the council's website here

Too little, too late. Their greed has a direct connection to the demise of the High St.

Add in that people have now developed new habits for shopping and the already depleted High St is going to enter a terminal downward spiral.

Also when the 'furlough' racket and rent moratorium end people will have no money left to spend.

When furlough ends I reckon plenty will lose their jobs.
