A 'smoking' manhole cover caused hundreds of homes across Kenilworth to lose power.

Warwickshire Police has revealed the reason why officers were called out to an 'incident' in Birches Lane earlier this morning (April 10).

The force said that they received a 999 call to report smoke coming from a manhole on the road.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service were also called to the road.

But, more than four hours later, the emergency services are no longer at the scene.

"We’ve now left the scene at Birches Lane, Kenilworth," the Warwickshire Police post reads.

"Emergency services were called shortly after 9am this morning to reports of smoke coming from a manhole.

"There were no reported injuries.

"The road has now partially reopened and work is being undertaken by the relevant utility agencies to restore power in the area."

The latest post on the Western Power Distribution website says that just 70 now remain without any power - and it should be fully restored by 3.30pm.

Initially it was described as a HV (High Voltage) incident as 315 properties in the area were initially without power.

Now it has been downgraded to an LV (Low Voltage) incident as more than half of those impacted now have their power back.
