More than 100 people have objected to plans to convert a former student house into a homeless hostel in Coventry.

Spring Housing Association is seeking to convert 6-7 Spencer Road, in Earlsdon, to provide temporary supported accommodation for up to 27 people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

The charity, which supports more than 1,000 people in similar properties across the West Midlands, said it would provide sustainable housing and 24/7 support to improve the wellbeing and employment opportunities of residents.

Coventry council officers have recommended the scheme is approved ahead of a decision by a planning committee on Thursday, April 8.

However the bid has sparked 123 objections and a petition of eight signatures concerned about the “inappropriate” and “unsuitable” location opposite King Henry VIII School and near to Spencer Park.

“This would be completely irresponsible for housing of this sort to even be considered in this location,” objections presented ahead of the meeting state.

“It poses a risk to their safety and children will be playing out on the field every day right opposite the shelter.

“ Homelessness unfortunately attracts anti-social behaviour such as drinking and drugs. Children should not be around this type of behaviour.

“Furthermore, needles or glass bottles are likely to be left on the street. Spencer Park is a beautiful park where children play; it cannot be a place for these people to congregate.”
