Large queues have formed this morning as Coventry's new Home Bargains store opened its doors for the first time.

Built at The Cross Point business park, on the site of the old Toys R Us, shoppers flocked to the retailer ahead of the 8am opening.

Queues have snaked around to the back of the building as eager customers wait to get their first look at the £9m store.

One customer told CoventryLive there didn't appear to be much concern for social distancing and some shoppers were without masks.

Employing 140 staff, the branch has created 127 new jobs, with the remainder transferring from other stores.

Ahead of the opening. Wajeeha Mohi-uddin, the new Coventry store manager, said: “It’s a huge honour to be opening our new Coventry store this weekend and something that I’m exceptionally proud of.

“Having worked for Home Bargains for just over six-and-a-half years, starting out as a supervisor at our Beacon Retail Park store, this is certainly a special moment and one I’ll cherish for the rest of my career.

“Cross Point Business Park will be a great location for us and we’re proud to be able to offer local people top-branded goods at exceptionally low prices.”
