New Union Street stabbing (was "Shooting?")

Postby rebbonk » Thu Feb 25, 2021 11:04 pm

I'm picking up vibes that there's been a possible shooting in the city centre just before 9:30. A kebab house by Little-Park St police station has been mentioned.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Two seriously injured in separate stabbings in Coventry city centre

Two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries after two separate stabbings in a night of violence in Coventry city centre.

The first incident happened at 7.30pm in New Union Street.

The victim, a man aged 29, ran into a nearby shop for help. Staff called 999 and the man was taken to hospital with multiple stab injuries.

An 18-year-old has been arrested.

Emergency services were then called to a separate incident just after midnight outside the Philip Larkin pub in the Burges.

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed this morning that a man was stabbed and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A cordon was put in place around the Coventry Kebab House after the earlier incident last night, and pictures from the scene showed smashed glass on the shop door.

West Midlands Police said this morning that forensic examinations are being carried out to help establish what happened.

The West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed that paramedics were called to a second incident last night.

He said: “We were called at one minute past midnight to reports that a man had been stabbed outside the Philip Larkin pub. Police were on the scene providing care.

“We sent an ambulance, a paramedic officer, the critical care car. A man was treated at the scene and taken to hospital on blue lights with potentially serious injuries.”

Rugby teenager charged with Rambo knife stabbing in Coventry city centre

An 18-year-old has been charged over a stabbing in Coventry city centre which left a man with serious injuries.

The 29-year-old victim was taken to hospital after he suffered stab wounds in an incident in New Union Street at around 7.30pm on Thursday, February 25.

Police were called after the injured man had ran in to nearby shop and staff had called 999.

Officers made an arrest at the scene and have now charged a teenager in connection with the incident.

Charley Taylor, 18, of Ennerdale, Rugby, was charged on Friday (February 26) with wounding with intent and possession of a knife - a Rambo knife with a 16cm blade - as well as criminal damage against a police car and assaulting an emergency worker.

Despite being charged on Friday, West Midlands Police has only just released the details today (Tuesday).

Taylor appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court on Saturday (February 27) when he was remanded in custody.

He will next appear at Warwick Crown Court on March 25.

Teen tried to kill complete stranger in ferocious Coventry city centre stabbing

A jury has agreed a teenager who carried out a ferocious knife attack in Coventry which left his victim with part of his intestines hanging out had meant to kill him.

The 17-year-old from Rugby, who cannot be named because of his age, and his accomplice Charley Taylor, 19, of Ennerdale, Brownsover, Rugby, had both denied a charge of attempted murder.

But a jury at Warwick Crown Court found the 17-year-old guilty by a unanimous verdict, while Taylor was found not guilty, but guilty of an alternative offence of wounding with intent.

Unknown to the jury, the 17-year-old had already pleaded guilty to further unrelated offences of wounding with intent and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Those charges had followed an incident in Grosvenor Road, Rugby, when a man in his 20s was shot in the face, just two days after the 17-year-old’s stabbing of Gurpreet Purewal in Coventry.

Both teenagers were remanded in custody and will be sentenced after reports have been prepared on them.

Judge Peter Cooke ordered that the one on the 17-year-old should consider the danger he poses to the public.

Teenagers jailed for city centre stabbing which left victim's intestines hanging out

Two teenagers were today jailed for stabbing a complete stranger in Coventry city centre who was left with his intestines hanging out.

Charley Taylor [pictured above] and a 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were both branded as "dangerous" by a judge as he sentenced them for the horrific attack with a Rambo knife in February.

The younger defendant was found guilty of attempted murder following a trial at Warwick Crown Court, while Taylor, 19, of Ennerdale, Rugby, was cleared of attempted murder, but instead found guilty of wounding with intent.

The 17-year-old, who the judge said had "no remorse", was handed a 12-year extended sentence for trying to kill Gurpreet Purewal in a robbery that quickly turned into "gratuitous" violence in New Union Street on February 25.

He will only begin to serve that sentence once he has finished a five-year term for shooting another man two days after the stabbing.

For that offence he had previously admitted charges of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and wounding with intent to cause serious harm.

Once he has served the five years, his consecutive 12-year sentence will begin and he will serve at least two-thirds of that period, and will only be released when the Parole Board consider it safe to do so.

Once he is released he will be on licence for the rest of the prison term plus a further three years.

Taylor was also deemed to be a dangerous offender and handed an extended prison sentence. He was jailed for six years and will serve at least two-thirds of that period before being considered for release.

Once he is released he will also be on licence for the rest of the prison term plus a further two years.

Judge Paul Cooke told Taylor: "Gurpreet Purewal was walking from a local convenience store back to his accommodation in Coventry city centre in the relatively early evening.

"He was minding his own business and had the great misfortune to turn the corner to find himself in a road where you and [co-defendant] were looking for a victim.

"What began as a robbery turned within seconds into a gratuitous stabbing by [the 17-year-old].

"The jury found that you knew he had the knife and engaged in conduct that assisted or encouraged him to use it."

Explaining why he ruled Taylor to be dangerous, the judge spoke of Taylor's criminal history which included three public order offences, assaults on eight occasions and carrying weapons twice.

Sentencing the younger defendant, Judge Cooke told him: "The victim had no time to do much more than show resistance to his bag going, before you started stabbing him.

"The jury ruled your intention was to kill Gurpreet Purewal. You left him with serious injuries and scarred mentally."

He also described the 17-year-old as a "habitual knife carrier" due to his involvement in gang culture from his mid-teens.
