A man who was so desperate to escape the clutches of police that he bit an officer has avoided being sent to prison.

Xhuljan Topali left the officer with a deep wound to his finger as he struggled with two members of Warwickshire Police after his car was stopped in Sherbourne.

The 28-year-old from London tried his best to escape their clutches on the morning of Thursday, January 28, but was instead arrested and later charged with assaulting an emergency worker.

He previously pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced today (Friday) at Coventry Magistrates' Court.

Topali was handed a three-month prison sentence, suspended for a year, and also told to pay £400 compensation to his victim.

Topali, of Beam Avenue, Dagenham, London, had also admitted driving without a licence, driving without insurance and breaching Covid legislation due to being outside without a reasonable excuse.

He had six points endorsed on his licence for the driving offences, but was given no separate penalty for the Covid breach.
