A Leamington man who assaulted two police officers after being arrested for burglary has been jailed.

Michael Atkins forced his way into a house in Avenue Road on October 24 last year before making off with a number of items of jewellery.

His victim returned home a short time after the burglary at 12.20pm to discover that one of her windows had been smashed, items were missing and there was blood in her hallway.

She reported the incident to police and Atkins was identified from CCTV footage she provided from cameras outside her address, showing a man breaking into her property.

Officers went to his home on Portland Street to speak to him but Atkins refused to let them in and fled from his property, jumping over the back fence to get away.

They pursued him on foot and arrested him a short time later.

While in custody at Leamington Police Station, he then assaulted two officers by pushing one of them several times and throwing a glass of water at the other.

Atkins was charged with one count of burglary of a dwelling and theft, and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker, and was remanded in custody.

He admitted carrying out a burglary and assaulting two police officers following his arrest for this offence, and appeared at Warwick Crown Court via video link on Tuesday (February 2) to be sentenced.

Atkins was jailed for 25 months for the burglary and one month for assaulting an emergency worker.
