A pensioner was saved from being conned by three men thanks to the efforts of two neighbourhood police officers.

PCs Amy Treadwell and Sam Rose were on beat patrols in Coventry on Tuesday afternoon (January 5) when they spotted two men in hi-vis vests that appeared out of place.

The men made off but the inquisitive officers searched the area and soon found the pair, plus another, trimming a tree in a pensioner’s garden in Kenpas Highway.

A spokesman for Coventry Police said: "The tree was pretty much bare and didn’t need much trimming, if any at all, but the men were planning to charge the 92-year-old woman almost £200 for their services.

"The men quickly got in their van and drove off – but the officers noted down its details and we will be making follow-up enquiries, plus we have decent descriptions of the men.

"Sam and Amy were in the right place at the right time to stop an elderly lady being taken advantage of.

"They ensured the pensioner was OK and gave her some advice about door-step callers before continuing on their rounds.

"A great example of caring, community policing."
