Coventry City Council have also reminded residents that they must mark Remembrance Day from home

A bold new sight is coming to Coventry's roads in time for Remembrance Day.

Giant poppies are being painted on major routes into the city in time for the occasion on November 11.

You will be able to see them on roads close to the Ring Road, near the War Memorial Park, the Council House and at Coventry Cathedral.

The design features the famous red poppy with the words “Lest we forget” alongside it.

The poppies will be installed over the next few days alongside an image that will also be displayed on the city’s variable message signs around the ring road.

Councillor Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: "These poppies are an innovative way of marking Remembrance Day during the coronavirus pandemic and we hope they serve as a poignant reminder to people who pass them that we will always remember and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in war."

She added: "As a city of peace and reconciliation, we have been determined that although we cannot meet in person to attend our traditional memorial service, we will not forget the sacrifices made during conflicts around the world."

Coventry residents have been reminded that they should follow national restrictions and mark Remembrance Day from home.

It's the only thing our council is any good at, Melisandre.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

I'd normally buy one from the bar at the pub. However, not being near a bar since 'waiter' service was enforced I've simply not seen them. I'll hazard a guess that money raised from poppy sales is heavily down this year.

You're spot on about Nuneaton and Bedworth, Melisandre. I always used to attend the Bedworth ceremony on the 11th.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

On Wednesday (November 11) people in Bedworth are again to remember at home - as there will be no Armistice day parade.

A siren will sound out across the town at 11am reminding people of a two-minute silence.

People are being asked to stand on their doorstep to mark the occasion.

A second siren will sound at 11.02am to mark the end of the silence, when organisers are then asking people to join in a two-minute clap.

Traditionally there is also a poppy drop over the cemetery, where the Remembrance service takes place.

Organisers have arranged for the poppy drop to take place across the town instead, thanks to the support of JE Hackett and Sons in the town.
