A new rainbow crossing using the colours of the Gay Pride Flad will be installed on a major road in Coventry city centre.

The colourful crossing will be created in Bull Yard as a celebration of the city's diversity and to show support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Councillor Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, said it would "remind people that hatred and bigotry have no place in our city".

It is set to be installed this evening (Friday, October 30).

Work will begin at 7.30pm and the crossing is expected to take around four hours to complete.

New Union Street will be remain open during the works with two-way traffic lights.

Councillor Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: “The rainbow road crossing is a powerful symbol for inclusivity.

"Coventry is such a diverse city and the crossing is just another celebration of that fact.

“Having the crossing right outside The Yard is a perfect location. It gives a warm welcome to those arriving from the station and we’re incredibly proud to be able to get this installed and to remind people that hatred and bigotry have no place in our city.”

It follows regeneration work in Bull Yard, which has seen a new resin-bonded gravel laid, a water feature and new lighting as part of big plans to get the city centre lit at night.
