DWP Permanent Secretary Peter Schofield said officials are now trying to make it easier for people to declare savings, “putting the onus on them”.

“You could imagine a real-time information type system that every time you declare you don’t have capital, we could see whether or not you actually did.

“That doesn’t exist today like it does for earnings.”

The problem with that is if the savings are below a certain amount it doesn't affect your benefit payments but you still have to supply a load of unnecessary paperwork and officials still have to process it even if it only consists of a £1 Premium Bond bought for you as a child! :clown:

That is why they should only ask for details of savings if it is likely to affect your benefit payments.

In fact - due to the complicated way 'notional income' is calculated - you can in many cases be quite a bit over the nominal savings limit and it still not affect your benefit payments.

I very much doubt Peter Schofield has a clue how the system actually works.
