An historic Nuneaton pub which holds a special place in the hearts of generations could be converted into flats.

The future of the Crown Inn pub has been unclear since it closed its doors without warning back in February 2018.

But now plans have been revealed to turn the 19th century building into ten flats.

An application has been submitted to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council which seeks permission for the conversion to take place.

Known for its incredibly long bar with an array of choices for customers, The Crown holds a special place in the heart of generations of townsfolk.

It was not just a place where people used to go to drink it was also a meeting place for many groups, including Nuneaton Folk Club, a games club and the local branch of the Green Party.

Sudden Impulse Theatre Company also used rooms above the pub to rehearse and the group have even staged plays at the venue in the past.

The pub was also known for offering a platform for many local bands and was known for hosting regular live gigs.

It was put on the market with RightMove but it appears no buyer has been found.

According to the design and access statement in the planning application, there was 'little or no interest' shown on the market for the building to continue as a pub.

"An alternative use needs to be found for this building quickly before it falls into a state of disrepair and a straight conversion becomes unviable," the report states.

"The vacant site will also attract anti-social behaviour, which could further damage the building and affect adjacent businesses."

I somehow feel a convenient fire might be forthcoming.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Vandals trash former Nuneaton town centre pub

Image

Vandals have trashed the inside of a former Nuneaton town centre pub, sending 'huge icicles' of glass on to the street. They narrowly missed shocked resident Sioux Watkins as she walked past the Bond Gate-based pub on Monday afternoon (June 20).

She told CoventryLive that windows on the third floor were being smashed, sending large shards of glass flying out. She said: "The glass missed me by inches as they were inside smashing it through from the third floor.

"Some of that glass came down in big shards like huge icicles … can you imagine if that hit someone coming from such a height too?

"I had to dial 999. These are proper window panes! It could kill someone. This is vile behaviour, it is such a shame to see a beautiful building destroyed."

A police patrol car was later spotted outside the once popular pub. CoventryLive has contacted Warwickshire Police about the incident and we await a response.

The 19th century pub has stood empty since it closed its doors without warning back in February 2018. Known for its incredibly long bar with an array of choices for customers, The Crown holds a special place in the heart of generations of townsfolk.

It was not just a place where people used to go to drink, it was also a meeting place for many groups, including Nuneaton Folk Club, a games club and the local branch of the Green Party. Sudden Impulse Theatre Company also used rooms above the pub to rehearse and the group have even staged plays at the venue in the past.

At one point it was thought that it was going to re-open as a pub, but then this fell through. Then a planning application was submitted to turn the building into flats. Again, this did not materialise.

So the building remains for rent on the Loveitts website.

Devastation inside trashed Nuneaton pub hit by vandals and squatters

Image

A devastating image shows the damage caused to a former Nuneaton town centre pub by vandals and squatters. The inside of the once popular Crown Inn shows smashed windows, broken doors and chairs strewn across the old bar area.

Part of the ceiling appears to have collapsed. Debris has been left strewn across the floor.

The scene portrays a sad image of the once busy pub, where generations enjoyed a pint, live music and even live theatre. Now just debris, dust and chaos remain.

As we reported in our newsletter, vandals almost caused a serious injury as 'huge icicles' of glass were sent flying into Bond Street on Monday afternoon (June 20).

They narrowly missed resident Sioux Watkins as she walked by, shattering all over the path in front of the pub. She raised the alarm with the police and a spokesman for Warwickshire Police said officers did attend - but found no one inside.

"We were called to a report of people smashing windows in the abandoned pub and that glass was coming down on to the footpath," the Warwickshire Police spokesman said. "Officers attended but nobody there. Efforts are being made to make the building secure."

CoventryLive has contacted Loveitts, which is marketing the building for lease. It has been on the market since the pub, known fondly as 'The Crown', closely suddenly in 2018.

At one point it was thought that it was going to re-open as a pub, but then this fell through. Then a planning application was submitted to turn the building into flats. Again, this did not materialise.

Plans to transform historic Nuneaton town centre pub into apartments

Image

A once popular Nuneaton town centre pub could be converted into ten apartments. Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has received a planning application that asks for the green light to convert the former Crown Inn pub.

The imposing Victorian three-storey building was once a huge player on the Nuneaton pub scene.

But it closed its doors without warning back in February 2018 and there have been attempts to re-open as a pub, but then this fell through. Then a planning application was submitted to turn the building into flats - but this did not come to fruition.

Now a plan has been submitted to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council asking for the green light to convert the building into ten separate apartments.

It explains that the former Bond Street-based boozer could fall into further disrepair if action is not taken to the building. It is no secret that it has been targeted by vandals who trashed the former pub from the inside, sending shards of glass into the street as unsuspecting residents walked by. As a result, it has seen the majority of the former windows secured with metal shutters.

"An alternative use needs to be found for this building quickly before it falls into a state of disrepair," the application states.

"The vacant site will also attract anti-social behaviour, which could further damage the building and affect adjacent buildings.

"The town centre of Nuneaton provides a significant number of job opportunities and there is a constant demand for central accommodation. The site's location adjacent to the train station with links to Birmingham and London will also attract commuters. Converting the site into residential units will bring added economic benefit to local shops, businesses, restaurants, etc."

It would see the first floor, which played home to the main bar, as well as the second floor converted into apartments, all of which have bathrooms and some with kitchens.

The full set of plans can be viewed by visiting the borough council's website, searching under the planning applications section for proposal 039045.

Members of the council's planning team will be looking at the proposals to decide whether or not they should be given the go-ahead.

Anyone who would like to make a comment has until February 28.
