A Coventry man hurled racist abuse at train station staff after being told he needed to wear a face mask - and then tried to dump drugs while being arrested.

Sean McCabe was approached by British Transport Police officers at Coventry railway station and spoken with about the need to wear a face covering unless exempt.

He became verbally abusive and was asked to leave the station and, after failing to do so, was arrested. During his arrest on July 11 he attempted to discard an amount of cannabis and was further arrested for possession with intent to supply.

While being searched, McCabe racially abused two members of rail staff and, on arrival at police custody he told a detention officer that he "had Covid" and deliberately coughed in their face.

McCabe, 24, of Dormer Harris Avenue, Tile Hill, was charged with and pleaded guilty to two racially aggravated public order offences, assaulting an emergency worker and possession of a class B drug with intent to supply.

He was jailed for 26 months at Warwick Crown Court at the end of September. The details of the incident have just been released by British Transport Police.
