A thug who headbutted a police officer after he stopped a vehicle in a village street has avoided going to prison.

Aaron Statham was handed a suspended sentence despite admitting the attack on the officer in High Street, Ryton-on-Dunsmore, on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 14.

Statham, 31, was charged with three offences in connection with the incident; assaulting an emergency worker, failing to provide a specimen and possession of cannabis.

He pleaded guilty to all three charges.

Statham was sentenced at Coventry Magistrates' Court on Monday, October 5, to a six-month prison term, which was suspended for a year.

Statham, of William Iliffe Street, Hinckley, was also banned from driving for two years and ordered to pay £200 compensation to the injured police officer and £185 towards court costs.

Chief Superintendent Ben Smith, head of local policing for Warwickshire Police, said: “Fortunately the officer was not badly hurt in this incident but it demonstrates the danger police officers face.

"Assaulting emergency service workers in their duty is unacceptable and we will always look to bring offenders to justice.”
