Plans have been submitted to build new apartments on a plot of derelict land behind houses in Coventry.

Twelve single-bedroom apartments are proposed by Aquia Housing on land to the rear of 1-13 Wycliffe Road West, in Upper Stoke.

The scheme would provide a two-storey purpose-built supported living block for young adults aged 18-65 with learning and physical difficulties.

Each apartment will have a living room, kitchen area, bedroom and bathroom to encourage the residents to gain greater independence within the surrounding local community; while a staff office with 24-hour presence is included.

In planning submissions to the city council, Aquia Housing said: “There is now an emphasis on encouraging individuals to live with greater independence whilst care and assistance are still provided all year round 24/7 in a safe, supportive environment.

“The proposal will provide much needed residential apartments within a sustainable location in accord with national and local planning policies.

“The development will have a positive contribution to the area whilst providing specialist accommodation within the heart of established residential development.

“The design is sympathetic to the surrounding residential development and provides an aesthetically pleasing scheme to replace the overgrown and derelict yard.”

Six cycle spaces and eight vehicle spaces are proposed, alongside further spaces to the site of the access drive from Wykeley Road.

This development will be run by Midway Care Group and around six to eight staff will be on site at any given time, the applicant said.

The land already has outline planning permission for eight houses which was granted in 2018.
